If you have any feedback on the show, please leave it in the forums — thread for this episode.
0:02:07 Introduction
0:09:18 Review
Ubuntu Intrepid beta first impressions:
Pros
- Hasn’t fried Fab’s Ethernet card (yet)
- Nice default artwork — Human New theme not default yet, though
- Nice “iTunes-like” disk space overview in installer
- Wifi/Bluetooth buttons now work on XPS m1330
- Much needed improvements and bug fixes to gvfs
- Much faster boot, frightingly quick shutdown
- Much better media unmounting
- Pretty stable for a beta
- Amazing number of packages worked on and updated every day
- System feels very snappy overall
- New GIMP 2.6 is now in Intrepid!
Cons
- When the hell will we have compizconfig by default?
- Auto-login checkbox in installer could be sonsidered unsecure
- Still pretty much unusable map in installer
- Tabs in Nautilus — but you gotta now that the feature is there (or be more intelligent than Fab)
- Flash is still a mess (not Ubuntu’s fault)
- Pulseaudio still flakey, control packages not installed by default
Verdict: Very stable and usable for a beta, a lot of incremental improvements — it’s not crap!![]()
0:31:58 Tips

-
Reine Dedeurwaerder sends us loads of stuff, including some pictures of her and her dog, a link to an article about the global popularity of Linux (which we briefly discuss), a link to pictures of some really crazy cabling, a link to a video about Freebase Parallax and an audio file about the proliferation of programming languages and the problems of software development today
