The main bug with ext4, as I understood it, was not that files weren't getting updated, but that some were being truncated to zero size when a system crashed. Which is a MAJOR fail, if the filesystem was indeed responsible.
And while you're moaning about the Windows registry, don't forget that Gnome has also adopted a similar technology in
GConf:
Essentially GConf provides a preferences database, which is like a simple filesystem.
