I think the whole thing with "installing software on linux is like rocket science... blah blah blah," is nothing to do with the actual installation process. My take on it is that a number of factors seem like a kind of barrier to people brought up with windows:
People know and love windows not for the system and how it operates, but for the software already packaged in. I mean, people who bash Linux tend to have store-bought Windows which usually comes with Office and other features bundled in. Not many newbies will have actually gotten a bare Windows installation. I have before, and I'm sorry but there's nothing more depressing. Word Pad... Yay.So people are kind of accustomed to brining home a computer and having EVERYTHING already neatly packed in. And when the inevitable time comes to actually have to install new software, it's all disked up and store bought. Windows, due to it's huge scale commercialism, spoon feeds the user. Thusly, people who use windows have been able to see in shops and such, packages which are as simple as OPEN DRIVE - PUT DISK IN - INSTALL.
Meanwhile what people hear about Linux is that EVERYTHING is done via terminal, which must scare them or something. I don't know. As this good person has explained in their delightfully sarcastic manner, terminal is not a necessity for new users. Although, i find apt-get install xyz so much easier than going through Synaptic.
To be honest though, I don't think this is going to be too much of a problem for much longer. Lots of people around me are trying Ubuntu now, which is ace since they're not nerds or computer whizzes and 99% of the time, they'll agree that is IS better than Windows. I feel that Linux haters are just the usual fantards and one day, they'll open their eyes and realise how difficult they were making life for themselves. Haha.
Oh, one more thing, my room-mate and other friend refuse to go over to Linux because they can't game on the system. My Room-mate is very much the type who has top of the range gaming hardware and, well, you know? Linux isn't very good for gaming. At all. Mind you, my interest was piqued by episode 91's talking about the possibility of using direct x on Linux? (Sorry if i picked that up wrong, i was walking along a windy street at the time).
Anyway, that's my inane rambling on the subject finished.
