I'm actually impressed with Jono's work, but I'm a little on the fence about the mastering. Dan, what's your take on the production work of that track? Jono's melodic part could have been tightened up a bit, if I'm not wrong (which I probably am, but whatever). It just doesn't sound like a final mix to me and my tin ear.
I'd have to listen to the track again to really appraise the mix but it sounded ok to me on first listen I think. Incidentally I got the chance to ask Jono if he got my email about mastering and he said it never arrived but he thinks his spam filter has been playing up, he's lost other mails apparently. I think the mastering sounds pretty good, he said a friend from his old band did it for him. Don't confuse mixing and mastering though, the mixing (ie the idividual instrument levels) is part of Jono's production work, mastering comes after the stereo mix normally. It's the process of optimising the sound with compression, eg and other tools for the best sound on the widest range of speakers and systems. It's often treated as something of a black art in the music business and you can pay a fortune to a mastering engineer but I don't think it's that hard to do. Especially these days with the cheapness of computers.
