Two Years

Posted by Fab

On this day two years ago, the very first episode of Linux Outlaws was released to the world.

In the two years that followed, we got an Ogg feed, moved to Libsyn, were crowned #2 Linux podcast by Linux Format Magazine, created the forum, designed our own merchandising, lost a whole show, started doing interviews, were interviewed ourselves, met for the first time, went to LugRadio Live and Linux Tag, moved to a dedicated server, failed several times, started to stream the recordings live, opened the Outlaw Archives, got into the Top 5 on Podcast Alley, had people cover our show’s theme music, recorded more than 100 shows, and most importantly, had a lot of fun in the process!

We now have consistently more than 6,500 downloads per episode and around 70-100 people watching the live stream each week. The forum has over 1,200 registered members and the official microblogging account (@linuxoutlaws) has more than 1,000 followers on Twitter and more than 500 on identi.ca. Pretty amazing for a little project that started as a crazy, random idea that neither of us thought would go anywhere, huh? But the best news of all: We still love doing the show every week and have no intention to stop doing it. So here’s to more fail-laden Linux reporting, crazy jokes, laugh-out-loud moments, Microsoft-bashing and weird music in the third year of the improbable, non-localised podcasting phenomenon that is Linux Outlaws!

Site Fail & Feed Weirdness

Posted by Fab

facepalmYou might have wondered why our website got redirected to my personal page beginning Sunday afternoon (CEST) and lasting until Monday morning. To make it short: Fab had another server admin fail. While trying to make our server more secure, I must have messed up Apache’s subdomain redirection somewhere which caused it to route all requests for linuxoutlaws.com to lamerk.org which is located on the same server. I did test the new configuration and could see nothing wrong with it so I happily proceeded to have a BBQ with some friends out in the sun, leaving my iPhone, and with it all connections to the virtual world, at home. I also busted my ankle that night, but that’s a whole ‘nother story…

Something must have happened on the server after I left because shortly after I had tested the setup and went outside, people began having problems with the site. I have no clue as to what changed, maybe I just didn’t test everything correctly in my hurry to get out into the sun. In any case, the site and with it the RSS feeds were offline. If you were using gPodder as your podcast client, you might have experienced something else: In a weird twist, gPodder decided to put some “Tiger Records” stuff in our feeds and tried to subsequently download 600+ MB of files. Apparently this is a “feature” of the program; if it does not find one of your subscribed RSS feeds on the provided URL, it crawls that site and all embedded links looking for something that looks like RSS with rich media enclosures. If it finds anything, it helpfully uses that as the new podcast feed. Quite a handy feature that means you can just pop linuxoutlaws.com in the new subscription field and get one of our feeds auto-magically but it also messed with my brain royally when I woke up Monday morning (slightly hangovered) and started gPodder to check if some new podcasts were out for me to listen to. As it were, the “spam” in our feed made me believe our server had been hacked. The fact that nobody, including Dan, hadn’t been able to reach me until then just complicated matters.

Long story short: I have checked the server thoroughly (just in case) and am quite confident that we have not been hacked but that everything was due to me being an idiot. I have also since repaired the subdomain problem and all of the site (including the forums) should be in 100% working order again. If you are using gPodder (a fantastic podcatcher, by the way) and you still have weird stuff in our feed, please re-subscribe and everything should be cleared up. You can also manually remove the non-LO entries from the list. I am really sorry for any inconvenience or frustration this might have caused and I am also very thankful to the great people in our forums, #linuxoutlaws on Freenode and our identi.ca group for their help in figuring this out. Also thanks to everyone who emailed telling us the site was broke, we got a lot of those as well. ;)

And so we prove once again that the life of an outlaw is everything, but it ain’t boring…

Hardy Released Today

Posted by Fab

The latest, greatest version of Ubuntu, 8.04 “Hardy Heron”, will be released later today. I just published our special episode on this topic. I hope we are not overwhealming you with all these shows… Starting next week, episodes will be released on our semi-regular schedule again, I hope. Of course, if you want to complain, there’s always the forums. Speaking of the forums, they seem to be coming along quite well which is great!

Ubuntu 8.10 is here

Dan and I both have been running the Hardy release candidate and betas respectively and do recommend to upgrade — if you want the details, listen to the above mentioned episode. Pat from the Linux Link Tech Show also seems to love it. With all the hard work that’s gone into making Hardy as great as it is, I want to congratulate the Ubuntu dev team on another great release. You guys rock!

And now, everyone head over to the Ubuntu site and download it once it’s officially released. Let’s turn their servers into burning rubble!

Drupal Fail

Posted by Fab

Yes, yes, yes… I realise the site was down for most of today. I am really sorry for any inconvenience that this might have caused. We had to roll back from last night’s backup and sadly have lost some forum posts and some registrations along the way. This also meant that the Ogg feed was unavailable for quite some time.

It all started with the fact that our site exceeded our self-imposed bandwith limit for Dan’s server yesterday evening. This caused a first downtime. We increased the limit and decided to move our Ogg files (which were being hosted here on this server) to Libsyn as we already did with the mp3 files quite some time ago. Because of that, I decided to upgrade this site to Drupal 6 to take advantage of the new views code in that version which would’ve come in handy to generate the new Ogg feed. I also customised a new theme to go along with this and went ahead to implement all that this morning. Sadly my upgrade didn’t go so well: My personal shipment of Drupal fail arrived and wiped out the whole public directory for the site. Luckily Dan had his cpanel handy and was able to rescue me in the nick of time.

After the backup was restored, I created the new views the old way and backported the theme I had created. I also tweaked the forum theme a bit to complement this. I then moved the first Ogg files over to Libsyn and redirected the feed accordingly. The Ogg feed should be fully funtional once again. This new setup doubles our bandwith costs but I saw that coming anyway. I am really glad that you all are listening to the show and the minimal Libsyn fees are a small price to pay to continue this amazing journey full of fun! If you enjoy the show as much as we do, you might want to consider pitching in and donating a small amount to our tip jar (in the right sidebar) — I don’t want to pressure anybody to do anything though and this is of course entirely up to you. As I said, the fun of doing this is well worth it in any case. If you still have problems with anything on the site, please leave a message in the forums and I’ll fix it as fast as I can. Hope y’all enjoy the new look!

New Look for 2008

Posted by Fab

As you can see, I just finished the redesign of this site and the forums. The old themes were only meant as a placeholder anyway since I wanted something in a brown-related colour scheme. I think it matches the outlaw/western theme perfectly. As some brawling drunk famously said on Firefly:

“Your coat is kind of a brownish color…”

I hope you like the new look! If you have comments or suggestions, please leave them here.

Linux Outlaws /forums

Posted by Fab

We have decided to scrap the Pligg site in favour of some forums. There was not much going on over there lately and I also recently discovered some slightly disturbing security problems with the system that I didn’t really wanted to live with in the long run. Since a few people requested forums anyway and they can basically fulfill the same purpose as the other site but are much more versatile, we decided to switch. I sincerely hope this doesn’t cause too much of an inconvenience to people.

Registration is optional of course, but we hope that many of you will join us at the forums and provide us with feedback and valuable ideas for future episodes. If you prefer to just hang out and talk about other stuff, that is fine as well. I am looking forward to many fruitful and entertaining discussions over there!

Please note that the theme for the forums isn’t finalised yet — in the moment we’re running the default prosilver template. I am looking at customising the looks of the place soon, but I’ll probably won’t get to it until the new year. In the meantime, the functionality is all there, however, so head over and enjoy yourselves!
