Download Stats
I have recently compiled statistics on the total downloads of Linux Outlaws show files up to Episode 100 from all available data collected up until July 9 on Libsyn, the Archives and the main server (although there are some missing records between Episodes 9 and 34 that I still need to investigate). In the spirit of a truly open podcast production, I want to share this data with you now. The end result is a total download number of 423,906 downloads in the roughly 22 months since September 12, 2007. Pretty amazing, huh?
If you want to see the nitty-gritty details, you can download the complete ODF spreadsheet and check it out. Also, for all those people who think we shouldn’t be publishing a MP3 file, it might be interesting to see that Ogg Vorbis only makes up 21% of our total downloads. As much as I like Free formats, I think the data speaks for itself.

I am truely stoked about the direction the show is heading, it looks like we are going from strength to strength and I hope we will continue to pick up new listeners and keep entertaining the regulars as well. On that note, if you have any ideas how the podcast can improve, get in touch — we are always welcoming any feedback we receive. And if you are not on board yet, what are you waiting for? It’s loads of fun, even if you aren’t an hardcore Linux geek. Trust me.

I saw the 21% of ogg and was like wow that’s alot more then the other podcast have been saying. I know that The Linux Link claimed that their number was around 10%. So I would say good job people. Please keep supporting ogg with your money and buy only players that support ogg.

Yes, I am happy that there are 21% of Ogg downloads and I hope the number will increase. We do everything we can to make getting the show in the Free format as easy as possible.
Just to make this clear by the way, in the post I was refering to people telling us to go Ogg-only à la the Linux Cranks.

Wow, nice work with all the stats dude. Making a spreadsheet and all that must have taken a while. Let’s break that 500,000 and head for the million
Nah, we’re doing great and much better than I ever could have dreamt when we started out. Who’d have thought hey, our little podcast getting near half a million downloads. Incredible

Yeah, it’s pretty cool!
I already had the spreadsheet for a while, I’ve just been keeping it up to date and added some stuff and new graphs.

[joking]
It must be all of the iTunes users that are skewing the results to MP3.

We started out with more than 80% downloads from iTunes. These days it’s about 40%, I think. And a surprisingly big number from the Zune store…

Great news! I can safely say I am at least one of those ogg’s. Of course I am also an MP3 (for my Mac, if iTunes supported OGG…). I am ashamed to say that early on in my listening, I was using the Zune Player as well. Your pod-cast is actually one of the reasons I finally cut the tether and stopped using Windows all but completely. Keep upt the good work, and here is to 1,000,000 downloads soon!

Probably the ogg statistics would change if it was listed ahead of mp3, or perhaps with equal prominence. In my case I just tend to click on the first, most obvious file, which is mp3.

Yes, we are planning to do that once I get around to the site redesign…
