Moonshine

Posted by Fab

You might remember Miguel de Icaza hinting at a new, secret project from Aaron Bockover in our interview with him in Episode 75. Well, Aaron has now released that project under the name “Moonshine” — which I must say is 100% Outlaws Approved! :D

Apparently Moonshine harnesses the Moonlight plugin for Firefox to enable you to automatically play back Windows Media files on your Linux desktop. Right now you still have to compile the thing to get it to work, but I can’t wait for packages to crop up for all the major distros. This might be another important step on the way to enabling casual users that just want “things to work” to make an easy transition to Linux.

Interesting stuff, I’m not keen on promoting Windows Media as a format but it’s like Flash, it’s something we can’t avoid and having options to make it work easily is good for end users. Like you say it if helps adoption of Linux in some small way then that’s good :) I expect flames from this hehehe :P

Fab, do you love Mono now? Did it all it take to sway you was an interview with Miguel? Maybe we should keep Ballmer away from you after all. I’d hate to see what that would do. Regardless, we still love you. Personally I’m indifferent to Mono. As a developer there are far better choices that a Microsoft technology that might come back and bite us in the ass. Isn’t the whole point of moving to Linux is to get away from what Microsoft and Apple offer?

I don’t really love it. Nor do I hate it or have ever claimed to do so. I have always used Mono apps because I like the apps and said so on the podcast. I just think this is a good idea and it sounds like a neat implementation too.

BTW, maybe you should also mention that you are a Java developer… ;)

    Fab,
Yes I get paid to sometimes code in Java. I have also been paid to code in other languages as well. As a programmer I think Mono is pretty low in my list of frameworks/languages to use.
